20 years ago, I dressed up in my long purple maxi dress and heels, and walked down the uneven pathways of Kibera slums. It was my first day at KICOSHEP and I wanted to make sure I looked smart. “ Siste, I like your style” is all I could hear, from the men who whistled at me, as my fearful but determined self, struggled to balance my heels and act unperturbed!
My Day 1 turned out to be many long months as I ploughed through and served Kibera community, through the many organizational tasks it took to support one of the largest HIV/AIDS organizations in Kenya.
In between managing home based care programs, where we supplied patients with nutrition, anti retrovirals and contraception, a large portion of my work included supporting the Aids Orphanage, introducing new income generating activities for the Youth and writing donor reports, that generated more funding, more medication and more support to conduct community mobilization and education programs. I taught on transmission of HIV, conducted rapid tests for HIV, taught on the management of STI’s and trained Trainers so that our outreach efforts at the VCT’s (Voluntary Counseling and Testing Centers) could expand even further.
20 years later, I carry out that same work, but this time, to support HousingWorks, a non profit making a difference in the life of many.
Your donations help further the work. Just a few years ago, New York State achieved a ZERO mother to child transmission! That’s a huge success, especially for someone like me who saw the ravaging impact HIV & AIDS has on our families in Kenya.
Statistics such as these prove that advocacy is working! It shows that your donated dollars are progressing our work to End Aids in NY by 2020 and therefore AIDS in the world.
Donate! Donate! and help me, make a difference here, so access to medication and the latest advancement of medication, may reach our Beloved in Kenya.Donate on this link - https://www.classy.org/give/f1826423/#!/donation/checkout
