Born in Africa and passionate about Healthcare, Nkatha remembers wanting to be a Doctor until that dream took an unexpected adventure, she never thought possible, but found highly gratifying.
I remember my first job after graduating with a Bachelors in Psychology was deeply fascinating. I found an internship position with Kibera Community Self Help Program (KICOSHEP), because no one else wanted to absorb a Psychology major. At that point, MBA’s were the hit, so a not for profit, community self help program, was the only position that could absorb this eager employee.
Well, it turns out, that was the best decision I made! Working at a community based care organization, that mobilized, educated and treated patients who were suffering from HIV/AIDS, built my capacity to organize and deliver compassionate care. White in KICOSHEP, I learnt the value to taking healthcare services directly to the patients and meeting their needs in their own home environment.
It was here that I also learnt capacity building and educating foot soldiers to help spread awareness around HIV transmission. While at KICOSHEP, I directed programs that managed the disease across a broad spectrum of populations and drove the initiatives hard in the impoverished parts of the Country.
My other responsibilities included improving relationships with International Partners so as to receive increased donations. White at KICOSHEP, I ascended into the role of a Program Manager, and took oversaw the development of various income generating activities, such as a carpentry program for the young men, sewing and bead program for the young women.
While at KICOSHEP, I saw first hand the impact of building income generating streams, for a population so vulnerable and prone to the voracious spread of a disease. I also developed the Children’s Orphanage, where we acted as intermediaries between the Parents that passed on from HIV/ AIDS and the new placing relatives.
Today, here I am, implementing all the skills that I learnt back home in Kenya. I enjoy developing social enterprises that enhance the lives of vulnerable people. At Sananga care homes, we nurture Adults recovering from substance abuse or other mental co-disorders, and help them make their path to recovery easier, just one day at a time.
